What is the Master of Arts in Security and Defence Management and Policy?
The Master of Arts in Security and Defence Management and Policy (MASDMP) is an interdisciplinary academic degree. The programme collaborates closely with RMC’S War Studies programme and draws significantly on material and staff of the Departments of Business Administration, Political Science and Economics, and Military Psychology and Leadership and increasingly on science and engineering subjects. Military and civilian individuals engaged or interested in the security environment, as it is and is emerging, in Canada and internationally, including traditional defence issues, will find the programme relevant and useful.
Do I have to attend the RMC campus?
No. The MASDMP can be taken in full on the Internet through DNDLEARN so candidates can continue their regular employment while doing graduate studies. Some face-to-face courses are offered at RMC now. Their numbers will be increased, and seminars and workshops are being planned.
What are the Security and Defence Management and Policy Programme requirements?
All candidates to the MASDMP programme must have completed an Honours (four-year) Baccalaureate degree with a minimum 70% (B-) average in their graduating year. Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered for acceptance with provisional or probationary status.
Formats of the Security and Defence Management and Policy Programme.
The programme is offered in three formats: all Course, Course plus Project and Course plus Thesis. All students are initially registered in the all Course format. Students who wish to enter the Project or Thesis format can apply when they are approaching completion of the core courses and after consultation with the Chair or Executive Director of the MASDMP Programme.
Core Courses
Every MASDMP student must take six core courses. Experience has shown that those students who focus first on core courses are successful sooner. At present the core courses are :
- DM537 - Financial Decision Making
- DM539 - Economics of Defence
- DM555 - Management Information Systems for Defence Management
- DM569 - Organizational Theory
and two of the following three courses:
- DM521 - Canadian Government and Public Policy
- DM523 - Defence Decision Making
- DM529 - Canadian Defense and Foreign Policy
Note:
- MBA567 - Organizational Behavior and Theory I can be taken as an equivalent to DM569
Programme Time frames
In full-time enrolment it normally takes five academic terms to complete the programme, i.e., two academic years and the intervening summer. In part-time enrolment, a student is asked to complete their studies over a period of time not normally longer than five years, in accordance with RMC regulations.
Programme Flexibility
The MASDMP Programme recognizes that students face professional demands that make it impractical or impossible to continue with their studies for a period of time. For a valid reason, any MASDMP student may be granted up to three separate ‘leaves of absence’ (LOA) from the Programme, each of up to a year in length, without in any way affecting their status on the Programme, their costs for it, or the administration demands on them.
