Summer Term 2013 - Distance Education Online Registration Postponed.

Online registration for undergrad distance education courses for the Summer Term 2013 has been delayed 1 week and will now open on 8 February 2013.

DNDLearn to Moodle Conversion

For Distance Education Instructors:

The Division of Continuing Studies (DCS) will be slowly transitioning from DNDLearn, as its course delivery software, to Moodle starting Winter 2013. The transition will begin with 22 distance learning courses for the Winter Term and will continue its transition throughout the Summer Term. The Winter Term instructors will be given the opportunity to attend onsite training. Instructors have also been added to an Instructor Training Course on Moodle. The RMCC Portal username/password are the credentials required to login to moodle.rmc.ca. Once logged into Moodle, instructors can find the Instructor Training Course listed under My Courses. This course has been created so that instructors can learn the new system while being able to manipulate the course as they would manipulate their own courses. Changes to the Instructor Training Course will be refreshed every 48 hours. Instructors can also self-learn the Moodle software at Moodle.org. For Distance Education Students:

Students who are familiar with DNDLearn should be able to adapt to Moodle relatively easily, as the software offers many of the same features. Interested students are also encouraged to visit Moodle.org to familiarize themselves with the software. Those with a current RMCC Portal account will be able to login into Moodle with their existing username and password and navigate around the site – the RMCC Portal username/password are the credentials required to login to moodle.rmc.ca. The Moodle converted courses will be clearly identified in the Course Material List and on the registration site. For more Moodle training information, please contact dcs-support@rmcc-cmrc.ca.

CANFORGEN 218/12

Officer Professional Military Education (OPME) Programme is being closed.

As announced as one of the Strategic Review outcomes, the Officer Professional Military Education (OPME) Programme is being closed.

The Canadian Forces Junior Officer Development (CFJOD) Programme supersedes and replaces the OPME Programme. The CANFORGEN 218/12 (Only accessible through DWAN) message above addresses the transitional measures that will be put in place for officers who are in the process of completing the OPME Programme.

Effective 30 October 2012, it will no longer be possible to enrol in the OPME Programme as a new student and OPME PLAR services will cease to be available. Furthermore, the Winter 2013 academic term, which runs from January through April 2013, will be the last time that OPME students will be able to take courses that are funded under the Programme. You have until 7 December2012 to register for this last term.

The RMCC Division of Continuing Studies OPME Programme Representatives will remain available to answer questions related to the existing programme until 30 April 2013. They can be contacted by email opme-pempo@rmcc-cmrc.ca or by telephone 1-800-721-3901.

For those students who have already started, or who plan to start, an undergraduate degree with RMCC or some other university, RMCC's Division of Continuing Studies will continue to offer, at least once per year and with normal course fees, the four university-level courses that were part of the OPME Programme. These courses are:

  • HIE208 – Canadian Military History: A Study in War and Military History, 1867 to Present
  • HIE275 – Survey of Technology, Society and Warfare
  • POE206 – The Canadian Forces and Modern Society; Civics, Politics and International Relations
  • PSE402 – Leadership and Ethics

To set the standard for university level distance education within the Department of National Defence.

Programme Principles

RMCC is an academic institution that understands the operational commitments of CF members. The degree programmes are designed with flexibility in mind and emphasize maximum efficiency and minimum time for completion, through application of the following principles:

Accessibility:

  • Attendance at RMCC is not required to complete a programme
  • Many courses are offered in both official languages
  • Courses may be taken either in classroom or using the most appropriate distance education delivery mode that best accommodates the student

Prior Learning Assessment:

  • Full transferability of approved university level credits obtained elsewhere
  • Credit is granted, as appropriate, for university level professional and DND courses
  • Credit(s) for second language proficiency

Flexibility:

  • Timetables accommodate interruptions due to operational commitments

Relevance:

  • In-service related courses can make up a significant part of the content for some programmes
  • Standard courses will be taught, where possible, within the defence context
  • New courses and programmes specific to the defence context are designed and offered

The degree programmes offered through DCS are thoroughly grounded in the elements of the military profession, permitting students to acquire a university degree regardless of where they live and work, and minimizing any negative impact on their commitments to family and career. The programmes integrate in-service training and experience with special and standard university courses. Courses are offered in English and French and students may complete assignments, essays and exams in the official language of their choice.

Distance Education (DCS-administered courses) at RMCC encompass the following delivery modes:

  • Residential or on-site (in a classroom setting and normally at a location remote from RMCC),
  • Paper-based (traditional correspondence), and
  • Web-based (Internet).

Web-based courses are delivered through the DND Learning Management System (LMS) called DNDLearn.
