The Canadian participation in the American Civil War, 1861-1865

By: Jean Lamarre

This research project wants to shed some light on the Canadian participation in this war. We want not only to establish the number of Canadians involved in that war but also their residence place (if they are from Canada or already had migrated to the US and decided to serve), know their motivation, their common military life and their participation to the several battles that marked this war. We want to know, through an analysis of newspapers and personnal militaray files, to recreate the universe in which they had to cope when they decided to fight in this all-American war. The preliminary results have been published in two articles, a third one will be released in 2001 and a book will come up in 2002.
