A former head of the Department of History at RMC who received his degree from Cambridge University, Professor Neilson is an expert in 19th and 20th century British foreign policy, Anglo-Russian relations, the British Army, and the First World War. His published articles touch topics like Lord Kitchener, British propaganda and intelligence in First World War Russia, and British military reactions to the Russo-Japanese war. And he has written Strategy and Supply, Ango-Russian Relations 1914- 1917 (Allen & Unwin, 1985), and Britain and the Last Tsar, The Russian Factor in British Policy, 1894-1917 (Oxford, 1996). He has co-edited (with Roy Prete) Coalition Warfare, An Uneasy Accord (Wilfrid Laurier UP, 1983), Men, Machines and War (Wilfrid Laurier UP, 1988), (with Ronald Haycock), The Cold War and National Defence (Praeger, 1990), (with B.J.C. McKercher) Go Spy the Land. Military Intelligence in History (Praeger, 1992), (with E. Jane Errington), Navies and Global Defence (Praeger, 1995), and (with A. Hamish Ion) Military Elites in War and Peace (Praeger, 1996). With B.J.C. McKercher, he is the general editor of The Praeger Series on Foreign Policy in the Interwar Period.
