Language Training
Second language training, the fourth aspect of cadet life, is designed to develop the ability to communicate in both official languages and to lead to an understanding of the principles of bilingualism. The programme begins with tests in four areas; oral comprehension, oral expression, written comprehension and written expression. Students are placed in small classes at their own level, and progress at their own rate to their maximum attainable level. There are five periods of instruction per week during normal class hours. As well, cadets who are not yet functionally bilingual attend a ten-week immersion programme at the end of the First Year.
Since RMC is a bilingual institution, cadets may receive instruction in either English or French as a matter of choice. Whenever possible, First Year cadets are given the opportunity to room with a cadet proficient in the other official language.
