Brief History
Lt (N) Lachance joined the Navy in 1986 as a Marine Engineering Mechanic. He attended the ‘Institut Maritime du Quebec’ in Rimouski where he obtained a Diploma of College Studies in Marine Engineering. In 1989, he was posted to Halifax where he served aboard HMC Submarine Ojibwa. In 1993 he trained to become a Machinery Control System technician and served in that role aboard the frigates HMCS Winnipeg and Charlottetown.
In 1996, at the rank of Petty Officer Second class, Lt(N) Lachance was selected for the University Training Program for Non-Commissioned Members. He attended Dalhousie University in Halifax were he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering followed by a Master of Applied Science. Following Graduation, he joined HMCS Ville de Quebec to commence his training as a Marine System Engineer. During his time onboard submarine and frigates, Lt(N) Lachance participate in various deployments including one with NATO’s Standing Naval Force Atlantic.
In 2005, he was posted to Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School in Halifax as an instructor and taught mathematics, sciences and engineering to technicians and officers. In 2008, Lt(N) Lachance was posted to the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Royal Military College in Kingston.
Specializations and Research Interests
While working on his Master’s degree, Lt(N) Lachance studied wear mechanism in grinding process and developed a system to measure growth of wear flat using an imaging system. Some of his work can be reviewed in his publications.
