Dr. Benson teaches French-Canadian literature and French medieval literature. After obtaining his doctorate from McGill University, he taught for a number of years at Saint Francis Xavier in Nova Scotia before coming to Kingston in 1995.
His areas of research and interest include the French-Canadian novel and short story, especially the work of Yves Thériault. His recent publications include: "L'image de la mer dans l'oeuvre d'Yves Thériault in Revue francophone de Louisiane; "La fonction du narrateur dans le conte fantastique québécopis du XIXe siècle" dans Études en litérature canadienne; and "Le carnaval dans Thérèse et Pierrette à l'école des Saints-Anges", a chapter of a book entitled Les littératures d'expression française d'Amérique du Nord et le carnavalesque. Dr. Benson is presently involved in a study of Eros and Thanatos in the work of Yves Thériault.
