- select a Keyword type search to search for keywords within a field (words or phrase - will search all fields)
- select a Browse type search to browse through a particular index e.g. author - Smith John
- combine keywords using AND, OR, or NOT; Ex:
- heat AND transmission (to retrieve records with both these terms)
- lubricant OR lubrication (to retrieve records with either one of these terms)
- materials NOT composites
- Use parentheses to specify order:
Ex.: materials and (test or testing)
- Use the “$” symbol to retrieve words starting with certain letters
Ex.: lubric$ (lubricant, lubricants, lubrication, etc.)
- Use single quotes to search for a phrase: ‘materials testing’
- Use positional operators to specify proximity
- adj – next to each other, same order
- near – next to each other, any order
- adjn, nearn – within “n” words, where “n” is a number
- Use Power Search or Limit Search to specify:
- Language
- Material type e.g. E-book, DVD
- Collection/Location
- Publication Year – the following operators are also available:
