Facilities - Department of Civil Engineering

Facilities available to the department are second to none - from the many extensive laboratories, state of the art survey equipment, ADP support services to one of the best staff to student ratios found at any post-secondary educational institution. The department is equipped with twenty standalone Pentium 90 PCs, and is connected to the College's network with numerous Hewlett Packard UNIX computers.

The teaching laboratories provide equipment to permit groups of three or four students to conduct experiments in structural engineering, soil mechanics, pavement materials, asphalt technology, hydrology, water supply, wastewater treatment, and environmental engineering; and to conduct exercises in surveying, photogrammetry and traffic engineering.

Structural Engineering

The Department’s Structures and Concrete Laboratory contains the following apparatus:

  • Eight (8) HBM computerized/electronic data acquisition systems;
  • MTS Structural loading system with 1 @ 500 kN, 2 @ 250 kN, 1 @ 100 kN and 2 @t 50 kN capacity pistons;
  • MTS Material Testing System with 1000 kN capacity;
  • MTS Material Testing System with 500kN capacity; 
  • MTS Material Testing System with 250 kN capacity;
  • Numerous universal testing machines of 900 kN, 550 kN, and 135 kN capacities;
  • 10 Ton dynamic scale;
  • Two (2) bench torsion testing instruments;

Geotechnical Engineering

The Department’s Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory contains the following apparatus:

  • Soil testing drive rods and sampling spoons; Atterberg limit testing devices;
  • Dry/wet sieving;
  • Hydrometers, and specific gravity apparatus;
  • Standard and modified Proctor compaction apparatus;
  • Harvard miniature compaction apparatus;
  • CBR equipment;
  • Nuclear moisture-density gauge;
  • Consolidometers;
  • Unconfined, direct shear and triaxial test apparatus;
  • Computerized/electronic data acquisition system;
  • Constant temperature and humidity environmental chamber;

Transportation Engineering

The Department’s Asphalt and Transportation laboratory contains the following apparatus:

Environmental Engineering

Undergraduate Civil Engineering students in Environmental Lab

The Department’s Environmental and Water Resources laboratory contains the following apparatus:

  • Temperature control bath, ovens, muffle furnace, incubator and autoclave;
  • Instruments to determine water pH, turbidity, conductivity, specific ion concentrations, and dissolved oxygen.
  • IDEXX quanti-tray for bacteria analysis.
  • Spectrophotometer.
  • Jar testing and filtration apparatus.
  • EXO Sonde for long term water quality analysis.

The Department’s Geotechincal Cold Regions research laboratory contains the following apparatus:

Computer Resources

The Department has two computer labs equipped with 42 Dell workstations. In addition, every resident Graduate Student is provided with either a standard desktop PC or an HP workstation.
